What drives up value in the arena of luxury items?  Remember, there is no such thing as intrinsic value.  Value is manmade.  It’s a fabrication.  Gold does not have inherent worth, we have given it stature and value almost arbitrarily.  Value in and of itself comes from scarcity, perceived worth, and is ultimately determined by whether or not someone agrees with you that something is worth a certain amount.  There’s no magic formula and sometimes certain products become valuable without intent, like Beenie Babies, or without rhyme or reason.

When a product does transition into one with perceived and therefore actual value, we become collectors of these products.  Rolex watches are firmly in this category.  Hit the internet, and you can find any number of thousands of self-declared Rolex experts.  Having experts also, in turn, helps increase value, because certain models of these watches can gain an almost cult following which drives value up, like a limited edition soul record from 1973.

Which models of Rolex have achieved this cult status and are therefore the most coveted?  You’ll find many differing opinions on that and, like any collectible, it is entirely subjective.  The two styles of Rolex watch that most experts will agree are highly collectible and desired are the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex GMT.  These classic Rolex models are on everyone’s list of most collectible and most highly coveted.

Why is this?

The Rolex Submariner is one of the most popular Rolexes as it sports a classic design for a moderate price.  Because of the known Rolex quality of manufacture, the mechanics are a known entity, reliable as a German train, requiring hardly any maintenance for generations to come.  It is aptly named, for it can withstand up to 1000 feet of depth, a feat the requires intense testing and design, and therefore reliability that is unmatched.  Because of all these knowns, the Submariner maintains its value, and collectors and watch enthusiasts alike know to snatch up a Rolex Submariner whenever they can find one.  Look for special anniversary editions that are also classic and desired.

The Rolex GMT Master is a beautiful watch, one which showcases Rolex’s signature style and prestige.  Its original design purpose was for flight, since the GMT can keep time in two time zones at once, so it’s great for destination and departure time.  The independent second hand made one complete rotation every 24 hours, allowing for accurate time telling with one hand.  The precision and mechanics that go into that are, of course, unmatched by any watch maker before or since.  This feature proved popular, and allowed for the GMT to become a household name among Rolex enthusiasts.  This self-winding watch is only increasing in value, and in popularity.

The single most popular model of Rolex is the Day-Date, and because of its popularity, it maintains widespread fandom and is therefore highly coveted even today.  Its simple design screams luxury, and the magnified date display is the signature feature of this watch, which also includes a special window that depicts the day’s name in its entirety, a classic move.  In case we needed any more incentive to covet the Day-Date, U2’s Bono is known to prefer this watch over any other.

Remember, value is manmade, but that doesn’t mean you can’t capitalize either for your own profit or status.
